Personal Care
Personal home care makes it possible for seniors to maintain their independence and age in place in the comforts of home instead of moving to an assisted-living facility — even if they have a physical disability or chronic health condition.
If your senior worries about losing their independence or struggles with everyday tasks, a Thomas Care Group dedicated personal care assistant can help provide the essential in-home support your loved one needs.
What is Personal Care?
Personal care is a non-medical home care service that assists older adults with their day-to-day activities to promote dignity and well-being while helping them maintain their preferred autonomy, lifestyle, and routines.
Personal care, sometimes referred to as “private duty” care, provides specialized assistance with activities of daily living such as:
- Bathing, personal hygiene, and grooming
- Dressing
- Errands
- Feeding
- Light housekeeping
- Meal preparation
- Medication reminders
- Mobility and transfer support
- Toileting
Personal care is helpful for individuals who need thorough physical help due to chronic illness or deficits after a stroke or dementia.
The two most common in-home care services–personal care and companion care—have some similarities but differ. Both are non-medical services that provide much-needed companionship and emotional support. The main distinction is assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and other tasks that require direct physical help.
Personal caregivers have specific skills and abilities to provide direct physical assistance while also performing other duties.
Companion caregivers can assist with errands or light housekeeping, but they cannot help with ADLs or perform tasks that require physical assistance.
Thomas Care Group recommends personal services if your loved one requires direct physical assistance or has a chronic health condition such as deficits after a stroke or dementia. Thomas Care Group may recommend companion services if your loved one does not need this level of assistance.
Thomas Care Group knows how important it is for older adults to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Starting private home care services with Thomas Care Group is easy.
A care coordinator will schedule a free consultation to help you learn more about Thomas Care Group’s approach to in-home assistance and address any concerns you might have. Your coordinator will also have the chance to learn about your loved one’s situation and develop a customized care plan and schedule.
Your coordinator will then select a caregiver whose skills and abilities suit your loved one’s needs and requests.
